A day before Hari Raya Aidifitri 1431, I receive a message from a fellow amateur radio operator in my Yahoo Messenger client (I use Pidgin). The message was seemingly genuine from him asking if I’m receiving his message, after answering his questions, he proceeds to ask me to wait for a moment ask he wants me to try something. It turns out that he asks me to visit an online quiz website.
The exchange seems almost fluid and being done by a human being, except that my friend and I never had conversation in English! This seems all too fishy when he didn’t response to my conclusion that his computer is infected by a malware/virus. Here are the screenshot of the exchange, (warning: the transcripts contain expletives)
Beware, these kind of viruses can compromise the security of your computer and may be used to harvest your password and other personal information for criminal intent. A seemingly innocent Online Quiz website may be used by phishers in order to commit fraudulent activity.
Verify whether it is really your friend is communicating with you and not somebody else or a program pretending to be him/her, and most importantly do not fell victim to Yahoo Messenger viruses, the result can be devastating.

Here is a plan for homebrewing a 2 Meter Square Dipole plan. The advantage of this antenna is that it is unidirectional, and it takes less space than the regular 2 meter dipole. The calculation included on the diagram below is for building the antenna using copper tubing, you should use MMANA-GAL or other antenna simulation software to come up with new dimension for other materials (aluminium, wire, etc).
Click on the diagram to enlarge it. Hopefully this will help you in brewing new antennas! Original plan taken from KOFF website
The (*)555 Timer IC software has been use in countless of electronic project that requires the use of square wave (Astable). NE555 IC can act as a timer, delayed switch (Monostable), Schmitt trigger and simple memory switch. Here a a selection of Youtube videos that demonstrate the usefulness of 555 IC timer for electronic hobbyist.
The 555 Timer can help any electronic hobbyist and newcomer to build circuits with Astable or Monostable configuration. The application is very easy to use as the user only need to key in their desirable value of when the 555 timer should activates or deactivates; and the software does the calculation for the capacitors and resistors value.
The software is written by Andrew Clarkson, and you can download the software from http://clarkson-uk.com/555-timer/
Windows users who are going to format their computer need not to worry about searching for hardware drivers anymore with DriverBackup! utility.
An easy to use utility, DriverBackup! searches for your hardware drivers in your windows operating system and let you select which of the drivers that you wished to archive, in order to be use later in new Windows installations.
Why DriversBackup!? because it is a pain in the ass to search for free hardware drivers,
Here is the Windows XP driver for Winbond USB WiFi dongle with PID/VID 0416:0035. This driver enables the device to be use under Ubuntu operating system with ndiswrapper.
You can download the driver here – Winbond USB WiFI IS89C35 Winxp Driver
I included this driver on my blog post because there are many websites out there offering bogus drivers for this device, which are very annoying when you need the to use the device in a hurry.
My friend, 9W2AZV gave me the drawing for this 2 meter antenna, I haven’t tried building it yet. The antenna seems to share common design with a collinear antenna. I ran this schematic in MMANA-GAL and found out the antenna has a very nice flat radiation pattern which maximize the transmission reach.
Here’s the the antenna design:
Here’s a video to my favorite game during my high-school days. It reach Malaysia in 1993-1994. The name of the game is UFO Defense: Enemy Unknown, published by Microprose.
It is a turn-based game, but unlike any typical turn-base game it includes elements of real-time action
The premise of this game is the aliens are invading Earth, and it is up to X-COM, an elite black-ops organization funded by UN to protect the planet from the Alien terror. The alien uses advance weaponry and genetic engineering to achieve their goals, while the humans with organized efforts from several countries would attempt to stop the invaders from succeeding in their plans.
More information about this game:
If you happen to download the Windows version, then you should also download the bugfix for a bug that caused video display garble error during the game start-up.
Download the bugfix here…
You can get the game from Amazon :
