Here are photos taken during the recent RAE class inSek Men Dato’ Syed Omar Alor Setar, Kedah. The class was being conducted by 9w2aze (SOP, Introduction), 9w2dot (technical, electronics) and 9w2crm (propagation, radiowave calculation).

The feedback from the class was extremely positive. The last class was held on 16 May 2008, saw 36 RAE candidates joining the class.

Homebrewing 6 Element OWA VHF Yagi (10dBi) – hamradio

Here are few photos that 9W2AZV and I have taken during the course of building our 6 element OWA yagi with 10dbi gain.

Materials used to contruct the antenna

8mm aluminium tube, 20 feet
6 feet length of 3/4″ PVC plumbing pipe
Ordinary household plug box

We use a plan taken from LB Cebik (W4RNL) website, first covered in : 10dBi – 6 element OWA Yagi-Uda Antenna for 2 meter band

Tools used

The total cost of the yagi construction was RM25 (USD 8.50) for the materials alone. Later we put it on a cheap tv antenna rotator which cost us another RM40 (USD 13.5)

Antenna Performance
The antenna has 1.3:1 reading (20watt) tx on 145.575MHz. 1.1:1 on 145.0MHz and 1.75:1 on 148.0MHz.

Up until now the antenna have recorded a distance record of approximately 180km on 2 meter FM QSO (from Beseri, Perlis to Bukit Merah, Perak) on 5W (51, 53 signal report). Other record includes distance communication between Alor Setar and Parit Buntar (distance 110km) on 10W (signal report 53,53).

The theoritical distance of this antenna if is mounted sufficiently high enough above obstacle is about 400km-500km. We only manage to mount it about 20 feet above the ground

A holiday trip to Genting Highlands – Malaysia

Hi there guys, you all probably wonders why I’ve been quiet for the past few weeks, well the reason is that I was away on a holiday trip with my family. This time I went to Genting Highlands.

Seems like it changed a lot since I last went there 10 years ago, here are some of the pics. I’ve stayed in Awana Genting Hotel for the duration of this trip and they gave me free cable car ticket ride to the theme park.

Do you know how fast these cable cars go? according to GPS reading, Its top speed is around 12-15 km/h and it slows down to 8 km/h when approaching its terminal. It’s funny to see some of the passengers closed their eyes when the cable car slides out from the terminal.

Apparently there’s a passenger limit on each cable cars.

I finally arrived at the theme park, I bought an all day pass wristband for me to enjoy all the rides over there. The funny square thing on the wristband is called QRCode (2 dimensional barcode), which is machine readable and meant to be read by a specialised scanner software.

Back from Port Dickson! – No big deal actually

I just got back from Port Dickson (Malaysia). Suffice to say that I don’t go there solely for a holiday by the way. And yes, despite what my friend have said about it, I still think Port Dickson sucks for my taste.

Ah by the way, It was new year when I was there. No big deal there either, actually.

Are those Running Shoes ?

Snapped this on the way back home, a while back. His kids are surely going to miss their school shoes :p

He drove the car without ever realising that his wife (probably) put their kids shoes to dry on the back of his car. The shoes didn’t last long however, after the traffic light turned green, I saw the shoes fall off the car. Too bad I was busy concentrating on the traffic at that time to snap another photo.

Anyway, happy school holiday guys…
