MYCallsign – Malaysian Amateur Radio Callsign Query Mobile Application has been Updated!

MYCallsign – the Malaysian Amateur Radio Callsign Query Mobile Application has been updated, now it comes with a new spiffy logo. The mobile application can be installed on most Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola and Samsung phones. The application can be used to display information regarding an amateur radio callsign, such as handle (fullname), apparatus assignment (AA) and AA expiry date, and it is handy for recording QSO information in the logbook.

The application is licensed under the GNU General Public License 2.0 and is available for download at MYCallsign GoogleCode website

Beware of the new Yahoo Messenger Malware/Adware Bots

A day before Hari Raya Aidifitri 1431, I receive a message from a fellow amateur radio operator in my Yahoo Messenger client (I use Pidgin). The message was seemingly genuine from him asking if I’m receiving his message, after answering his questions, he proceeds to ask me to wait for a moment ask he wants me to try something. It turns out that he asks me to visit an online quiz website.

The exchange seems almost fluid and being done by a human being, except that my friend and I never had conversation in English! This seems all too fishy when he didn’t response to my conclusion that his computer is infected by a malware/virus. Here are the screenshot of the exchange, (warning: the transcripts contain expletives)

Beware, these kind of viruses can compromise the security of your computer and may be used to harvest your password and other personal information for criminal intent. A seemingly innocent Online Quiz website may be used by phishers in order to commit fraudulent activity.

Verify whether it is really your friend is communicating with you and not somebody else or a program pretending to be him/her, and most importantly do not fell victim to Yahoo Messenger viruses, the result can be devastating.

Here is the Windows XP driver for Winbond USB WiFi dongle with PID/VID 0416:0035. This driver enables the device to be use under Ubuntu operating system with ndiswrapper.

MCMC has updated Malaysian Amateur Radio callsign database

MCMC (Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Comittee) has updated Malaysian Amateur Radio Apparatus Assignment and Callsign database, which can be viewed here – http://www.skmm.gov.my. The updated database include details of newly registered hams who’ve recently passed RAE 2008-1 examination in April.

Alternatively you could try the experimental AJAX web interface from ashamradio callsign project. Thanks to 9M2CIO for making the database available to use freely.

10 Meter band ham radio calling frequency in Malaysia

Since 10 meter activities gained popularity lately in Malaysia, I decided to publish 10 meter calling frequency for the benefits of local hams in my region :

28.480 MHz USB
28.485 MHz USB
28.490 MHz USB
28.495 MHz USB
28.500 MHZ USB

Most local and DX activities concentrated on these frequencies with 28.490 MHz being the most popular for calling DX stations.

Tips for newbies hams on HF
Be sure to ask if the intended frequency is unoccupied by asking (“is this frequency in use ?”) at least three times. Then proceed to make a general call, “CQ CQ CQ this is 9W2QSO 9W2QSO 9W2QSO calling CQ CQ CQ, this is 9W2QSO calling any station and standing by” and listen for any call for few moments.

In Malaysia, the best time for 10 meter USB operation is around 4:20pm – 10pm, your milleage may vary though.
